THE "SWINGING FARMER"

William, that’s me, just mud on my boots and a head full of birdies ever since Dad first tossed me a rusty old cut down Wilson Patty Berg iron at 12. Golf – it just clicked. Something about the quiet challenge, the green expanse, the way one perfect strike makes you feel. A tiny seed sprouted: the dream of becoming a pro. This isn’t your typical “sporty kid” story though – stick with me and I’ll spill the beans on how a farmhand chased birdies across continents, one putt at a time.

Will-About---Post-Shot

I loved the wide-open spaces and fresh air of Norfolk, but I craved adrenaline too. When I wasn’t helping out on the farm, you’d find me catching waves or grinding rails. Something was telling me there is more to my story than life on the farm. Maybe it was my dad’s influence. He was a farmer by day, but a folk singer by night – the “Singing Farmer,” no less.

School wasn’t always easy for me, but I loved sports. Team sports, though, felt too limiting. I really enjoyed the self-exploration side of things and independence of solo games like golf. So, when an American college with a top-notch golf program came calling, I jumped at the chance knowing how much of an opportunity it could be.

Those college years in the US were a game-changer. I honed my skills on the course, learned valuable life lessons, and soaked up the competitive spirit of American college sports.

Graduation day in 2012 meant one thing: turning pro. I started in Spain, breaking even on the Evolve Pro Tour. Then it was onto the Euro Pro Tour where I had two wins in 2014. Asia beckoned next. I qualified for the Asian Tour in 2016, but a limited schedule made it tough. PGA Tour China was next which set me up for a return to the US for the Korn Ferry Tour. After that, it was back to the UK, followed by two seasons on the Asian Development Tour.

Finally, in 2024, I earned my card for the Asian Tour! It’s been a long journey from the Norfolk farm to the greens of Asia.

FAQs

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Some people often ask me questions when I am out and about – so I thought I’d stick down the ones I get asked most.

My Dad started me off when I was 12. Living on a farm meant that we had somewhere to hit golf balls.

Haha, that’s a tricky one. I think it has to be my putter (when its working) because it helps to rein in a difficult round.

Preparation depends on where the event is and if I have to fly or drive. Normally I just practice and work on my game the same way for all events. I like to walk the course if I have time and hit some chip shots and get a good feel for the greens and how the ball reacts when it lands.

Sheringham Golf Club! Second to that I would have to say Pebble Beach.

I like to play social golf when I can. Normally this happens more in the winter when I typically have less tournaments on.

I love all food! I try to eat very healthy and having travelled a lot in Asia I have to say some kind of vegetable Asian dish would be my favorite.

You can guess I’m probably going to say Tiger. He was so exciting to watch.

I really wanted to be a golfer from my early teens. I loved all sport but golf for me seemed to be my best chance at having a career in sport.

I have a strict gym regime, I train 3 days a week with my coach – Miles Collins. This involves a variation of speed training and injury prevention.

Downtime for me has got to involve surfing, walking the dog or cooking.

I like to make my practice as competitive and as real as possible – like in competition!

I always get nervous yes. It normally takes a few holes to get the adrenaline calmed down.

Nowadays I find it a little harder yes as I have a lovely home but I do still enjoy the travelling of course. I get more excited when playing in bigger events!

Future plans are to keep working away at the game, keep fit and see where it takes me.

Yes I talk to some of my golf mates when I’m not on the golf course. Just general chat and sometimes talking about the golf swing and ways to get better.

My biggest achievement to date was winning the Belgium open in 2014. I’ve had several 2nd place finishes too in China and Asia.

I love all music. Son of a Folk Singer means I have always been around music and all different types. I occasionally pick up the guitar myself!

“My” perfect holiday would be somewhere with Surf! If the waves were good at my local beach then that would be fine with me!

If I wasn’t a golfer I wouldn’t know what I’d be! My mates say I’m rubbish at everything else! I’d dream of being a surfer!

I like all board sports, I just find it fun! I have been seen riding a horse every now and again with my girlfriend who is  passionate about horses.
